A paragraph from Gadfly’s Zoo: With Additional Stories

Jungles in Vietnam were deadly. There were poisonous snakes and poisonous toads. But it was also beautiful to me. The trees were green and the fountain was clear. Drops of water sparkled like diamonds.

We made our tents and headed to sleep. We woke up the following morning.

Gadfly said, “Last night in my dream. I was in a zoo. But it was different. Unicorns were running in the jungle. Mermaids were swimming in ponds. Dragons were flying in the sky.”

Said, “Maybe the zoo you dreamed of is in paradise. Maybe it is God’s zoo.”

He said, “Jungles of Vietnam are more than enough for me.”

A soldier said, “Gadfly. Did you dream in black and white or colors?”

Another paragraph from Gadfly’s Zoo: With Additional Stories

What is human life? How is it different from the life of fishes? And how is human life different than mine? I have no one to talk to but my heart speaks to the sea. It becomes happy when the sea waves glitter like diamonds in sun rays and when they glitter like ruby in moonlight.

Do the fish in the bottom know me? Do they want to talk to me? Sometimes they make me feel I want to talk to them.

What is life and what is destiny? To me, destiny is nothing but just watching the sea. My destiny is nothing more than seeing the lighthouse shine and show passengers ways. But till this day I have not seen a single ship on the horizon. I wish I could have a single ship. I do not know where in the middle of the sea am I. I gaze at the stars when I feel lonely. I talk with them. They make me feel like I am like them. Alone, silent, and sober. I feel I am talking to God as I gaze at the

Another paragraph from  Gadfly’s Zoo: With Additional Writings

Her golden hair and mermaid form gave me insomnia. This is not my world I thought. I decided to go back to Nikita. I sold my bar and bought a strong small boat. I went near the Bermuda Triangle and prayed to the Sea god. I asked him to take me back to Nikita and the lighthouse.

Suddenly I started whirling. After half an hour I reached a familiar sight. My eyes were thirsty for Nikita’s look

Nikita was out on the balcony. As soon as she saw me she came down. Slowly the boat paddled along the lighthouse and it stopped.

There were tears in Nikita’s eyes. I kissed her on the lips and it was a thousand oceans deep.

Nikita said, “I have been waiting for you.”

We were both restless before. Now we are together. I thanked the sea god from the bottom of my heart. I thanked him from every inch of my soul. Now we can live forever. Nikita is my treasure and I am not going to leave her in search of other treasures. We can now live for centuries long. Every day we will love each other as if it’s our last. Every minute will be an eternity. We will catch fish in the sea. We will gaze at the waves from the lighthouse. We will be together at sunrise and sunset. I will watch her hair turn golden in the sun’s rays. We will hold each other tight in the fireplace in winter. In every full moon in October, we will perform our rituals. Oh! Nikita, you are my treasure. You are my love. You are my life partner. You are my flesh and blood. We will be together forever. Someday we will be stars in the sky.
